 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Women and Social Welfare Ministry Alongside Violence Against Persons Prohibition Implementation Committee (VAPP) Rescues 16 Year Old Rape Victim At Ogidi.

In what could be described as an "intentional" sin, One Mr Christopher Umezuo, resident in ogidi has been accused of sexual offence by his victim.

His victim who is 16 years old and a JSS2 student of De Light Secondary school Ogidi was said to have been handed over to him and his wife few years ago by the victims father Mr Bartholomew Ileagu who hails from Amaokweafa, Ụdị local government area of Enugu state.

Narrating how she was has been forcefully taken advantage of, the victim said Mr Umezuo usually asks her to make the bed once the generator is switched on around 8pm and from there have her to his satisfaction. She explained that the incident has been going on since 2021, but when he intimated the Mrs Umezuo the wife of her perpetuator, she didn't believe her but rather said the husband can't stoop so low to have anything of such with her.

On why she endured all through 2021-2022, the victim said she was hoping that the man would stop because he's the one paying her school fees. She also noted that the man threatened to stop paying her fees if she tells anyone. She further said that she decided to tell her father when it became unbearable for her considering the pain she usually go through during the act.

Her father Mr Ileagu when the issue was brought to his notice  quickly came to Ogidi to formally lodge a complaint against Mr Umezuo at the Ogidi police area command.

The issue was brought to the attention of the ministry through the coordinator of Violence Against Persons Prohibition Implementation Committee Mrs Hope Nkiruka Okoye. It was after that, that the Commissioner for women and social welfare Hon Ify Obinabo sent a team that took the girl to Ntasi Centre Enugwu-Ukwu for medicals and treatments.

The victim was attended to at the Centre and drugs administered while the culprit would be apprehended and tried in court.
