 LAGOS TO PRIORITISE MERIT-BASED LEADERSHIP, STRATEGIC TEACHER RECRUITMENT TO ELEVATE EDUCATION STANDARDS The Lagos State Government is embarking on a significant transformation of its post-primary and technical education sectors, prioritising meritocracy in leadership appointments and strategically recruiting qualified teachers in core subjects. These sweeping reforms, unveiled by the Commissioner for Education, Mr. Tolani Alli-Balogun, during the Lagos State 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held on Thursday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, underscored Mr. Governor’s unwavering commitment to educational excellence. Slavery Remembrance Day: Obaseki urges sustained global efforts to curb human trafficking

On this day, it is important to reiterate the need to strengthen global efforts and partnerships to end the scourge of human trafficking and all other forms of modern slavery.

For us in Edo, we have recorded milestones in the fight against human trafficking and all other forms of human exploitation on the 
back of our robust partnership with the private sector and international development organisations.

With their support, we have been able to substantially contain the scourge of human trafficking and irregular migration, which once pillaged our youths, who are our most valuable resources. These partnerships must be sustained if we are serious in realizing the global vision of totally eradicating human trafficking and modern day slavery, as well as all other forms of human exploitations.

Apart from the various programmes implemented by the state’s skills development agency, EdoJobs to create more jobs and equip youths in the state with in-demand skills to be globally competitive, we have set up the Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking; enacted the Edo State Trafficking in Persons Prohibition Law and set machinery in motion for top-of-the-range basic and technical education in the state, as part of revved up efforts to curb the trend of human trafficking.

 Actor Baba Ijesha appeals five-year jail sentence for sexual assault Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor. He has requested the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, to overturn the ruling of the Lagos State High Court, which sentenced him to five years in prison. The conviction was handed down by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on July 14, 2022 to Baba Ijesha. Baba Ijesha through his counsel Kayode Olabiran on Tuesday, told the appeal court that his client was set up and that he acted according to a script that he was invited to act on by his colleague. “The Appellant was set up. The Appellant is an actor. He acted in a script that he was invited to act by his colleague (PW1), Damilola Adekoya,” he said.
