 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 10-man arm robbery gang in connection with the bank bullion van robbery along Enugu-Portharcourt expressway near Ntigha Junction in Isiala Ngwa North Local government Area.

Recall that on 26 July 2022, a bullion van loaded with cash, belonging to New Generation bank was ambushed by a large number of arm robbers. 

Parading the suspects, the commissioner of Police in Abia state, Mrs. Janet Agbade said the dreaded armed robbers killed the cash officer of the bank and made away with all cash in the bullion van, adding that one of the armed robbers was neutralized in the process. 

According to the Police chief, Prosper Israel, a dismissed DSS personnel was among the arm robbery gang including Adesoji Adeniyi, Nnamdi Nwaosu aka prophet, Nwachukwu Albert, the lead Armourer, Felix Ajalaja, Moshood Opeyemi, Matthew Christmas, Azubuike Amaefula, and Monday Samuel.

She called on Abians to always give useful information to the police in order to enhance the proactive measures in protecting lives and property. 

The sum of 10,184,000.00 was recovered from the gang.

Confessing the crime, one of the suspects, Prosper Isreal Chijioke, a native of Ugwunagbo LGA in Abia state said he was dismissed from DSS and was involved in the crime after his younger brother gave him part of the stolen money but regretted his role in the crime. 

However, the commissioner of Police called on parents to always monitor the source of livelihood of their children/wards.
