 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will on Monday, November 7, set in motion the legal fireworks for the 2023 election with the inauguration of over 300 members of the election petition tribunal.

The spokesperson for the Supreme Court, Dr. Festus Akande, said this in the invitation sent to journalists in Abuja on Saturday.

According to him, the event has been scheduled for Andrews Obaseki Auditorium at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja.

He also explained to our correspondent why the inauguration would be coming so early.

Akande said, “If there’s delay in swearing them in, you will ask why the delay, but it’s done early now, you are asking questions again. What will one do to please the world? I believe you have not forgotten that they will undergo induction for sometime before they commence sitting.

“Elections are taking place in February 2023; we are in November already. Do you want them to be inaugurated in February next year, being the same month of election? We have always been swearing them in few months to elections and this one is not an exception.”
