 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. CP condemns attempted murder on Ruth Tamuno in Rivers

The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Okon O. Effiong has condemned  in its entirety, the mob action on one Ruth Tamuno on 14/11/2022, whereby some group of boys numbering about six, led by one Samuel Matthew beat her up and inserted substance on her private part, for allegedly stealing of an Iphone. CP Okon described the act as barbaric and inhumane. 

A statement by the spokesperson of the command, SP GRACE IRINGE-KOKO said  CP has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), to conduct a discreet investigation on one Samuel Matthew and Emmanuel Iweruma who were arrested in connection with the case, as efforts are on to arrest other fleeing suspects.

The statement reiterated that no matter the circumstances, resorting to self-help to carry out such act without recourse to extant laws and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, is totally condemnable and tantamount to violation of the law. 

The statement however said the CP urged citizens of the State to always be law-abiding and not to take laws into their hands, they should also assist the Police in the fight against criminals and their activities in the State.
