 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau,OON,SAN hosts President of Commonwealth Lawyers Association, Brian Speers.

Mr. Brian Speers who is on a 1-day visit to Nigeria is the President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association(CLA). He was hosted by a delegation led by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau,OON,SAN.

He was welcomed with a private dinner and brainstorming session on Wednesday night with the NBA President and a former President of the NBA, Augustine Alegeh,SAN among others.

Later yesterday, Thursday 17th November, 2022 The NBA President led the delegation and guest on a Courtesy call to the National Industrial Court(NICN) Headquarters where they were received by the President of the NICN, Justices of the NICN and other Principal officers. The delegation included the General Secretary of the NBA, Adesina Adegbite,FICMC and the Assistant Publicity Secretary, Charles Ajiboye among others.

The delegation then proceeded to the Court of Appeal where they were received by the President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem and the Presiding Justice of the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal.

The National Secretariat was the next stop for the inauguration of the Flood Disaster Relief Committee led by Mallam Yusuf Ali,SAN. After which the delegation was received by the Hon. Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami,SAN and other principal officers at the Federal Ministry of Justice,Abuja.

The visit climaxed with a Lunch at Transcorp Hilton with some elders and Chairmen of the NBA Branches in Abuja.

The President of CLA was full of praises for the NBA and commended the NBA President for the quality of relationship between the Bar and the Bench.
