 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity.  The Senate has  confirmed the appointment of the former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase (Rtd) as the new Chairman of Police Service Commission (PSC )


The red Chamber confirmed the former police boss after scaling through the screening hurdles by Senate Committee on Police Affairs headed by Senator Jika Halliru representing Bauchi Central 


Presenting the report of the committee during plenary in Abuja, Senator Halliru said Arase performed credibly well during the screening exercise and proved that he can lead the Police Service Commission (PSC ) as its Chairman. 


The Senate after adopting the report unanimously confirmed Solomon Arase as a substantive Chairman of the Police Service Commission.


It would be recalled  President Muhammadu Buhari in a letter to the Senate on Tuesday which was read on the floor of the upper legislative Chamber by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan asked the Senate to consider and screen the nominee for the post of Chairman, Police service Commission.


Buhari said the appointment is by the provision of section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
