 South Korea’s impeached President, Yoon to skip first trial hearing. South Korea’s impeached President, Yoon Suk Yeol, will not attend the first hearing of his impeachment trial, scheduled for next week, due to safety concerns. This was disclosed in a statement by his lawyer, Yoon Kab-keun, on Sunday. The embattled president has been holed up in the presidential residence, protected by an elite guard unit since his suspension and impeachment last month, following a short-lived declaration of martial law that plunged the country into political chaos. Yoon has refused to meet with prosecutors and investigators, with his presidential guard unit thwarting an attempt to arrest him after a tense, hours-long standoff earlier this month. The Constitutional Court has scheduled five trial dates, spanning from January 14 to February 4, DAILY POST reports.  The Senate has  confirmed the appointment of the former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase (Rtd) as the new Chairman of Police Service Commission (PSC )


The red Chamber confirmed the former police boss after scaling through the screening hurdles by Senate Committee on Police Affairs headed by Senator Jika Halliru representing Bauchi Central 


Presenting the report of the committee during plenary in Abuja, Senator Halliru said Arase performed credibly well during the screening exercise and proved that he can lead the Police Service Commission (PSC ) as its Chairman. 


The Senate after adopting the report unanimously confirmed Solomon Arase as a substantive Chairman of the Police Service Commission.


It would be recalled  President Muhammadu Buhari in a letter to the Senate on Tuesday which was read on the floor of the upper legislative Chamber by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan asked the Senate to consider and screen the nominee for the post of Chairman, Police service Commission.


Buhari said the appointment is by the provision of section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
