 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  Governor Dapo Abiodun paid a crucial visit to the Ogun State headquarters of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN in Abeokuta where he had a quick but in-depth brainstorming session with top officials on ways to relieve the groaning people of the State of the tiresome cash crunch. In addition, Governor Abiodun made a call on the apex bank to intensify verifiable efforts to ensure wide and non-selective distribution, as well as tackle hoarding in deposit money banks.


The governor reiterated that he's  hopeful that this essential session together with his initial visit alongside other concerned Governors to President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja would bring the much needed solution to this troubling situation.


He therefore calls on all the good people of Ogun State to remain calm, and be assured that we will do our best to see the end of this difficult period.


Following his meeting with senior officials of the CBN, Governor Abiodun also held a follow-up meeting with all heads of commercial banks in Ogun State towards easing the cash crunch at the deposit money bank level, which is the focal point of contact with the people facing the untold hardship.
