 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity. 2023 Election: Ex-UK Ambassador Makes U-Turn, Expresses Disappointment With INEC

Contrary to her earlier position, the former British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ms. Catriona Laing, has expressed disappointment with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the recently concluded 2023 general elections.


Ms. Laing made the assertion in a short video clip that’s currently trending on social media.


The video is a deviation from her previous statement in which she gave the conduct of the election passmark and told Nigerians to be proud of the outcome.


In the latest video clip, Laing retracted her opinion and expresses disappointment with INEC and reiterated her government’s threat to slam visa ban and/or other punitive measures on electoral offenders.


After the backlash public outcry, she seemed to have walked back her condescending and hasty endorsement of the election which has been adjudged by both local and international observers as poorly executed.
