 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity. Almajiri found dead in Jigawa, with gorged eye

Police in Jigawa recovered the corpse of a 16-year old “Almajiri” in Kiyawa Local Government Area of the state on Friday.

Assailants had gorged one of his eyes before the police arrived.

Police spokesman in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu, stated on Friday that the Islamic knowledge teacher of the deceased, Malam Muhammad Mustafa, reported the matter to the police.

“The complainant reported that one of his students, aged 16, went to a nearby bush to fetch firewood at about 8 a.m. on Friday, but did not return home.

“The student was later found in a pool of his own blood with one of his eyes removed,” he stated.

Shiisu added that the boy was taken to Dutse General Hospital where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

He stated also that a manhunt had started for the assailants.
