 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity. Preparatory to handover come May 29th, 2023, Benue State Governor-elect, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has released names of his Transition Committee.

The committee has former Head of Service Chief Mike Iordye as chairman while Dan Ashiekaa is to serve as secretary.

Members include Prof. John Enyi, Prof. Steven Ugbah, Chief Hinga Biem, Dr. Moses Tule, Arch Samuel Agule, Hon. Paul Biam, Barr. Moses Atagher, Hon. Emmanuel Atser, Dr. Emmanuel Chenge, Mr. Humbe Mkena, Dr. Christopher Obute, Prof. Christie Ekoja, Hon. Philip Kwaghsor and Lady Helen Atom.

Others are Barr. Bemsen Mnyim, Mrs. Nana Mede, Hon. Nick Wende, Dr. Timothy Aikyor, Hon. Nick Eworo, Lady Susan Achiaga, Rt. Hon. Dorothy Mato, Dr. Patrick Onumah, AVM Monday Morgan, Hon. Solomon Wombo, Hon. Dan Onje, Barr. Patricia Kupchi and Rev. Pst Philip Tachin.

In a statement signed by his Director of Communications, Kula Tersoo, Alia said the Committee has a mandate to collaborate with the outgoing government’s Transition Committee to ensure a seamless handover of power.
