 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CONFERS CON AWARD ON GOVERNOR HOPE UZODIMMA 


His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma was yesterday bestowed with the National Honour of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The award which was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari is coming at the same period when the Rivers State Government conferred on the Governor its highest Award of Grand Service Star of Rivers State (GSSRS).

The news of the award was received with excitement by ndi Imo and it is in recognition of Governor Hope Uzodimma's immense contributions to national development and unity.

In a statement issued by the Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba, the State views the award as a vindication of Governor Hope Uzodimma's tireless commitment to national cohesion and his patriotic zeal in the discharge of his duty.

Hon Emelumba said the people of the state were particularly appreciative of President Muhammadu Buhari's love for the Governor and the people of the state.
