 1980 AFCON Champion Charles Bassey Dies at 71 Charles Bassey, a member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, has died at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness. He passed away on Saturday in his hometown, Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday by its General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, describing the loss as part of a “day of double tragedy” following the earlier death of team captain Christian Chukwu. Bassey was part of the Green Eagles team that secured Nigeria’s first AFCON title with a 3-0 victory over Algeria at the National Stadium in Lagos on March 22, 1980. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching and managed several clubs, including Calabar Rovers, Mobil Pegasus, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingoes, Akwa United, and Wikki Tourists. His passing brings the number of deceased members of the 1980 squad to nine.

Gov. Soludo inaugurates hostel donated by foundation at Community High School Akwaeze

The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has inaugurated a 250-bed capacity female hostel in Community High School, Akwaeze, Anaocha Local Government Area (LGA).

The project was bankrolled and donated to the school by Chief Ikenna Okafor, Founder of Nzekwuabuo Foundation, a Non Governmental Organization (NGO).

The governor during the inauguration also laid the foundation stone of the male hostel, and inspected the equipped science laboratories, an e-library, a multi-purpose hall, an ICT hub and a 60 KVA diesel-powered generator also donated by the foundation to the school.

He commended Chief Okafor for the initiatives, describing him as a great son of the soil, who is not just a blessing to the people of Akwaeze town but to the entire Anambra State.

``We have come to celebrate you while you are still alive because you are living a life with purpose," he said.

The governor spoke on school adoption by well-meaning Ndi Anambra, stressing that the initiative would contribute greatly in strengthening the education sector of the state.

Earlier, during the breaking of kolanut, the Traditional Ruler of Akwaeze Town, Igwe Christopher Okpala, thanked God for the gift from Chief Okafor, calling on other citizens to emulate such initiative.

The Igwe called on Ndi Anambra to continue their support for the present administration in the state by promptly paying their taxes and other designated rates regularly. 

The Transition Committee Chairman, Anaocha LGA,  Mr Ikechukwu Ozoh while taking delivery of a security vehicle donated to the local government by the foundation lauded the developmental contributions of Chief Okafor through his foundation. (MOI).
