 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Kwara Driver, One Other Jailed for Internet Fraud in Ilorin
Justice Adenike Akinpelu of the Kwara State High Court, Ilorin has sentenced a 28 year-old Driver, Ojeniyi Boluwatife from Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State to 12 months imprisonment, having found him guilty of offences bordering on internet fraud.

Ojeniyi was convicted and sentenced alongside one Olaleye Solomon from Ilesa West Local Government Area of Osun State.

The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC had on Friday, May 19, 2023, arraigned the duo of Ojeniyi and Olaleye before Justice Akinpelu on separate charges.

Count 2 of the charge against Ojeniyi reads: “That you, OJENIYI BOLUWAITFE sometime in July 2018 to June 2019 in Ilorin, Kwara State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did knowingly had in your control the sum of Nine Hundred and Sixty Five Thousand Eight Hundred Naira Only (N965,800) paid into your Guaranty Trust Bank Account Number 0220614310 which is reasonable suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activites.”.

The charge against Olaleye reads:”That you, OLALEYE SOLOMON sometime in the year 2023, in Ilorin Kwara State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did attempt to cheat by Personation, when you pretended to be one Dora Villarreal via your Facebook Account, Linked to your mobile phone numbers and in that guise communicated with Floyd Schumacher thereby committed an offence Contrary to Section 95 of the Penal Code Law and punishable under Section 324 of the same Law”.
 
They pleaded guilty to their respective charges.

Prosecution Counsel, Rashidat Alao who reviewed the facts of the cases through witnesses who are operatives of the EFCC tendered the extra-judicial statements of the defendants, items recovered from them at the point of arrest and the sum of N175,000 (One Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand Naira) which one of  the defendants had benefited from the criminal activities.

Alao urged the Court to convict the defendants as the prosecution had been able to establish its cases against them.

Justice Akinpelu convicted the defendants as charged.

The Judge sentenced Ojeniyi to six months imprisonment each on count 1 and 2 with option of fine of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) Only on count 1 and N50,000 (Fifty Thousand Naira Only) on count 2. The court ordered the forfeiture of the convict's iPhone 7 and the sum of N175,000 (One Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand Naira) Only which he benefited from the criminal conduct.

Justice Akinpelu also sentenced Olaleye to six months imprisonment with option of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) fine. The court ordered that one Samsung Galaxy A02 which he used to perpetrate the crime be forfeited to the Federal Government.
