 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. The attention of Anambra State Police Command has been drawn to a trending video of three suspects paraded on 28/4/2023 at the Command headquarters. Awka, but was misconstrued to be police officers or security personnel by sections of public opinion.

The Command wishes to state that the suspects are not police officers or members of any security agency. The trio are among the six armed robbers, criminals/impersonators wearing security uniforms to beat security screening before they were intercepted, identified and arrested on 27/4/2023 by 7:30 pm by police operatives attached to Forwarding Operating Base, Aguata, while on stop and search along Afor Nnobi road. 

The suspects, Hyicent Ujwuika aged 45 years, Sunday Samuel Akpan aged 31 years and Chinonso Offor a.k.a Wolf aged 24 years.* confessed on the same day, abducted a man and robbed the victim of his vehicle and were en route to their den. They also confessed that the police uniforms they were wearing were stolen from Area Command Ogidi last two months during an attack on the Police formation. 

During a search conducted by police operatives on the intercepted vehicles, *one unmarked brown Lexus Jeep and a black Prado Jeep with Reg Nos. ABUJA GWA 696 CM*, rescued an abducted victim who was blindfolded in the vehicle and recovered *three AK47s, two Cell phones, two Bulletproof vests, two Walking talkies, one Police uniform (camouflage), three AK47 Magazines, one hundred and twenty life ammunition, one Police belt, one Hand glove, a pair of Police boots, two Police caps, one military T-shirt and one blue police uniform.*

While the investigation is still ongoing, the suspects are already helping police with more information on their modus operandi, identifying other gang members and their criminal hideouts. Therefore, members of the public are urged to disregard any impression or suggestions that the suspects are security officers but they are criminals/impersonators.
