 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Akeredolu not dead, ignore rumours – Ondo govt. 

Ondo State Government has urged the public to disregard the rumours circulating about the alleged death of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, it was clarified that the governor is alive and has been attending to state matters while also delegating state functions.

In the last 48 hours, rumour of the demise of the governor had taken over the social media space, with the situation creating apprehension in the state. Ademola-Olateju emphasised that the clarification was necessary due to the tension the rumours had caused in the state and across the country.

The commissioner also noted that the government had been receiving numerous calls and messages regarding the governor’s health, and had initially chosen to ignore the false information until it became apparent that certain individuals were attempting to use it for political gain.

“We have been inundated with calls and messages concerning the state of health of the Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON. We had chosen to ignore this wicked fabrication until it appeared that certain people sought to draw political mileage from the disinformation. “Though the Governor has been indisposed, he has been attending to state matters and delegating functions to functionaries of the government when necessary.
