 Senate Approves Death Penalty For Drug Traffickers The Senate has approved the death penalty for those convicted on the charge of drug trafficking in the country. The punishment prescribed in the extant NDLEA Act is a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The resolution of the Senate followed its consideration of a report of the Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters and Drugs and Narcotics, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters presented the report during plenary, Sen.Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno North). The bill, which passed its third reading, aims to update the list of dangerous drugs, strengthen the operations of the NDLEA, review penalties, and empower the establishment of laboratories. Anambra State Women and Social Welfare Commissioner Honourable Ify Obinabo has handed over baby abandoned by her teenage mother to grandmother. 

The Women Affairs Commissioner who did the handing over in her office in Awka noted that the baby was brought to her by a doctor said that the young mother abandoned the child in his hospital after delivery.

Reacting, Hon Obinabo lamented on the high rate of child abandonment among teenage girls and urged them to stop. She went ahead to charge parents to equally treat their girl children with love anytime there's such incident instead of sending them out to fend for themselves.

Hon Obinabo though has reunited the newly born with her family strictly under the care of the grandmother has mandated them to always come to the ministry every two weeks to ensure that all conditions are met and strictly adhered to.
