NYSC to sanction members violating scheme’s dress code – DG

17th Jul 2023

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), says it will sanction any member caught violating the scheme’s dress code or breaking the NYSC rules.

The NYSC Director General (DG), Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Dogara, said this during a visit to the Borno NYSC orientation camp on Sunday in Katsina.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that corps members posted to Borno have been camping in Katsina State due to the security situation in Borno State.

Dogara enjoined them to always adhere to the official dress code for corps members, dress well and also wear right kits for every occasion.

He advised them to be disciplined in their conduct, adhere strictly to instructions and avoid all forms of negative youthful exuberance.

The DG also appealed to the corp members to avoid illegal journeys, adding that whenever it was necessary, they should make sure they obtained permission.

“We have lost so many corps members that have engaged in illegal journey, sometimes it is even difficult to trace their next of kin to know where they came from. Please don’t do that,” he appealed to them.

Dogara also asked them to exhibit the habit of tolerance among themselves throughout the orientation exercise.

He said through that, the purpose of the scheme could be achieved.

“I was briefed about your well conduct, and so far there was no report of indiscipline in the camp. And you should continue to do so. You must abide by the simple rules within the camp.

“As you are aware, all the camps we have dos and don’ts. We have the camp court, whenever you commit any offense, you will be subjected to trial.

“But so far I will urge you to continue with your good conduct and never do anything that would negate the essence of you being here. The essence is deliberate and calculative.

“The aim was to put you together to understand Nigeria as a diverse country, coming from different states, socio-cultural background, society and community, so that you can learn within yourselves,” he said.

Dogara advised them to be friends with each other, adding that they must tolerate each other in whatever thing they would do.

He said also that they should prepare for any challenges as part of processes for them to become leaders of tomorrow.

According to him, what is expected from the corps members is a high level of discipline.

He told them to also shun drug abuse and cultism as they could easily destroy their lives.

The DG further advised them to engage themselves in constructive activities that would move them forward.

He said they should avoid using social media to transmit happenings in the camp.

Dogara further called on the corps members to take their personal security very seriously, adding that the scheme was also doing its best to ensure their safety.

“Anyone you see complaining about NYSC, that person did not serve. And I am telling you that many Nigerians want to wear the scheme’s uniform,” he said.

Dogara called on them to also pay more attention to the skills acquisition programme during the three weeks course.

He said they should prepare towards becoming self-dependent and use the opportunities of the service year to improve themselves.
