 Senate Approves Death Penalty For Drug Traffickers The Senate has approved the death penalty for those convicted on the charge of drug trafficking in the country. The punishment prescribed in the extant NDLEA Act is a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The resolution of the Senate followed its consideration of a report of the Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters and Drugs and Narcotics, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters presented the report during plenary, Sen.Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno North). The bill, which passed its third reading, aims to update the list of dangerous drugs, strengthen the operations of the NDLEA, review penalties, and empower the establishment of laboratories. Section 11 of the current Act prescribes that “any person who, without lawful authority; imports, manufactures, produces, processes, plants or grows the drugs popularly

Newly appointed minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has declared that she will run an open door policy as minister of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation,

She stated this during a welcome ceremony at her official assumption of office as minister shortly after the swearing in ceremony of ministers at the Presidential villa, Monday in Abuja.

Edu assures that she is ready to work with stakeholders to ensure the furtherance staff of the ministry to recommit themselves to efficient service delivery to Nigerians.

“I am open to suggestions, I am open to advice so I will run an open door policy, I like to listen, I like to learn and I like to teach. I also like to push for results so I can call you at 2 AM bcause we have to get the job done.

“A lot of people in Nigeria are living under one dollar ninty cents per day, this will not continue, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that this is the end, we must bring renewed hope.

“Finally, we will be reviewing a number of points as we go along. I will be bringing several innovations on board through the ministry and through the agencies that the ministry supervises but what is must important is that we keep our focus on lofty a hundred and twenty-tgree million Nigerians out of poverty and yes we can do it with determination and strong political backing from his excellency, (President Tinubu), till we achieve results,” she said

Edu said she is committed to ensuring that the ministry is one of the best and that staff welfare will be well catered for.
