 Nigeria Posts $6.83bn Balance of Payments Surplus in 2024 — CBN The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced a $6.83 billion Balance of Payments surplus for 2024, reversing deficits recorded in the previous two years. In a statement on Wednesday, the apex bank attributed the surplus to macroeconomic reforms, improved trade performance, and stronger investor confidence. Key highlights include a $13.17 billion trade surplus, a 48.3% surge in gas exports, and $20.93 billion in personal remittances. Portfolio investments more than doubled to $13.35 billion, while foreign reserves rose by $6 billion to $40.19 billion. Despite a 42.3% drop in FDI, the CBN said the overall outlook remains strong, citing improved data accuracy and the success of FX market reforms.

 We may be pushed to invade Niger — US tells coup plotters


The United States of America has warned the Niger junta that America may be pushed to be involved militarily if the country’s military rulers do not return to constitutional order.


The US acting Deputy Secretary, Victoria Nuland, in a special briefing on Niger disclosed this via a teleconference on Tuesday.


She noted, “…There is still a lot of motion here on many sides with regard to where the governance situation will go.


“So we will be watching that closely and there are a number of regional meetings coming up and consultations with allies and partners that we need to make.


So we’ll be watching the situation, but we understand our legal responsibilities and I explained those very clearly to the guys (Niger junta) who were responsible for this and that it is not our desire to go there, but they may push us to that point, and we asked them to be prudent in that regard and to hear our offer to try to work with them to solve this diplomatically and return to constitutional order.”


Nuland noted that President Joe Bden has been in constant touch with President Tinubu, the ECOWAS Chairman as well as many other European allies.

 Actor Baba Ijesha appeals five-year jail sentence for sexual assault Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor. He has requested the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, to overturn the ruling of the Lagos State High Court, which sentenced him to five years in prison. The conviction was handed down by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on July 14, 2022 to Baba Ijesha. Baba Ijesha through his counsel Kayode Olabiran on Tuesday, told the appeal court that his client was set up and that he acted according to a script that he was invited to act on by his colleague. “The Appellant was set up.
