 SENATE ADJOURNS EMERGENCY PLENARY ON STATE POLICE OVER REP’S DEATH. The Senate today suspended consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill and all other legislative business at its emergency plenary session to honour the memory of Hon. Yaya Tongo, a member of the House of Representatives, whose death cast a sombre mood over the National Assembly. The upper chamber had reconvened from recess amid expectations that lawmakers would accelerate action on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across the federation, a measure widely seen as a major step in the ongoing effort to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. However, proceedings were cut short after Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the death of Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State in the House of Representatives. No part of her body was mutilated- FUOYE confirms d€ath of student

The Federal University of Oye, Ekiti state has dismissed reports claiming the body of one of its students, Atanda Modupe Deborah of the Faculty of Basic Medical Science, was mutilated by yet to be identified persons.

The 100-level student of the institution went missing after she went to study in the class on Monday night, September 4, 2023. After days of searching for her, her body was found buried in a shallow grave behind her faculty with her eyes plucked out on Wednesday, September 6. Unconfirmed reports had claimed that her eyes were plucked out by those who k!lled and buried her.

However in a statement released, the school authorities say they visited the morgue where her body was deposited and can confirm that no part of her body was mutilated.

Part of the statement reads

"The cause of d€ath and manner in which she d!ed is a thing of great pain to the entire student populace of FUOYE. As we say our goodbyes to a precious and bright student such as MODUPE, members of the FUOYE STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT (FUOYESUG) visited the morgue and we were able to confirm to everyone that no part of her body was mutilated contrary to claims and rumors flying around, we can confirm that not less than twelve(12) people have been arrested in connection with the crime and we would not rest until the perpetrators are brought to justice".
