 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Defence Headquarters says terrorists and their cohorts risk annihilation if they fail to to drop their arms and rejoin society to provide a better life for themselves and their children


A statement signed by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba said the armed forces will continue to apply strong military pressure on groups undermining the national security of the country, adding that it is clear that, terrorists and their cohorts cannot win in the face of ongoing military pressure against them and therefore, encouraged them to drop their gun.


He promised that the military will work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of the citizenry while applauding the trust and cooperation from supportive groups which he said is unprecedented. 


According to him, input from the groups is making a difference in their operations and called on citizens to report suspicious events around their localities as they are poised to do something about it. 


Major General Buba said the counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations of the armed forces across the country in the last three months demonstrates the will of the armed forces to defeat terrorism and other violent extremist groups including those who support and finance them. 


He emphasised that during the period under review, offensive operations and air strikes across the six geopolitical zones from June to August 2023 saw troops neutralizing 814 terrorists, arrested 1,326 criminals, arrested 42 kidnappers, 231 collaborators, 33 armed robbers, 80 cattle rustlers, 325 militias, 27 rails vandals, 73 gunrunners, 191 suspected oil thieves and rescued 721 kidnapped hostages while 4,560 terrorists and their families surrendered to troops.


The DMO further stated that troops recovered a total number of 501 weapons, 3,577 livestock, 3,269 of assorted kinds of ammunition and 674 other equipment
