The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday. Ex-corper defiles benefactor’s 13-year-old daughter in Ogun

A 29-year-old man identified as Tayo Adeleke is currently in the custody of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly defiling his neighbour’s 13-year-old daughter.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspect was caught in the act inside the room of the minor’s mother in the Monico area of Ogijo, Ogun State on October 9, 2023.

The victim’s mother identified simply as Mosunmola was said to have returned late from work when she noticed that the light in her apartment had been switched off.

While suspecting that something was not right, she was said to have immediately put on the light, only to see the suspect defiling the minor.

The suspect, who was said to have recently completed his national youth service, was accommodated by the family of the minor.

A family source who chose to speak on condition of anonymity said the family had been feeding the suspect only for him to pay the family back with evil.

“The family has been the most accommodating since his youth service programme. They fed him and were even thinking of getting him a job after his NYSC. He betrayed everyone,” the source told our correspondent on Thursday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Thursday, said the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, once the preliminary investigation was completed.

“The suspect has been arrested after the incident was reported by the mother of the victim,” she said.
