 1980 AFCON Champion Charles Bassey Dies at 71 Charles Bassey, a member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, has died at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness. He passed away on Saturday in his hometown, Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday by its General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, describing the loss as part of a “day of double tragedy” following the earlier death of team captain Christian Chukwu. Bassey was part of the Green Eagles team that secured Nigeria’s first AFCON title with a 3-0 victory over Algeria at the National Stadium in Lagos on March 22, 1980. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching and managed several clubs, including Calabar Rovers, Mobil Pegasus, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingoes, Akwa United, and Wikki Tourists. His passing brings the number of deceased members of the 1980 squad to nine.

Speaker Congratulates Emir Of Zazzau On 3rd Anniversary 

Speaker House of Representatives Abbas Tajuddeen, has joined millions of people from Zazzau Emirate, Kaduna State and Nigeria at large to to congratulate the Emir of Zazzau Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, on his third anniversary on the throne.

his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity MalamMusa Abdullahi Krishi, the Speaker described the Emir as an embodiment of peace and unity not only in the Zazzau Emirate but in the entire country.

Dr Abbas Tajuddeen, also noted with delight how the Emir who is the Chairman Kaduna State Council of Traditional Rulers, has been providing good leadership in the Zazzau Emirate, Kaduna State, Northern Nigeria and the country as a whole.

He said leaders like Emir Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, are needed in the society for peace, unity, growth and development of the people. 

Speaker Abbas, who is currently holding a traditional title in the Emirate as Iyan Zazzau maintained that the royal father has been a blessing to Zazzau Emirate since his ascension to the throne three years ago.

"His invaluable contributions to nation building through the traditional institutions are legion. I make bold to say that the Zazzau Emirate is lucky and blessed to have His Royal Highness as its Emir at this time," the Speaker said.

Speaker further prayed for continuous Allah's protection, blessings, sound health and long life for the Emir to enable him to continue providing good leadership.

Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, was appointed the 19th Emir of Zazzau on October 7th, 2020 by the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir Ahmed El-rufai, following the demise of late Alhaji Shehu Idris who spent about 45 years on the throne.
