 The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday. Appeal Court Annuls Zamfara Governor's Election, Orders Rerun

In a landmark decision, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned the election victory of Governor Dauda Lawal in Zamfara State. Governor Lawal, who secured the governorship seat following the March 18 election, had his win invalidated by a three-member panel of justices.

This ruling comes after a legal tussle initiated by the All Progressives Congress (APC) against Lawal's victory under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) initially declaring Lawal as the winner, the tribunal's decision to uphold his election was challenged by the APC.

The Court of Appeal's judgment now demands a rerun of the election in three specific local government areas: Maradun, Birnin Magaji, and Bukuyun. This development signals a significant shift in Zamfara's political landscape, setting the stage for a fresh electoral contest in these crucial areas.
