 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  Two arrested for stealing bitter kola, others in Anambra


Two suspected armed robbers have been arrested in Amichi community in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, for allegedly stealing bags of bitter kola.


The suspects, identified as Onyenachiya and Chigbo were also said to have stolen telephone handsets, ATM cards, and money belonging to a yet-to-be-identified lady, who owned the bags of bitter kola.


It was also alleged that suspects raped their victim in turns.


This was corroborated in a video currently trending on social media showing how the suspects were being interrogated by some people, while their pump action gun and the stolen bags of bitter kola were displayed.


The suspects allegedly confessed to the crime; while blaming their actions on the devil.


When contacted on the development on Thursday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command was aware of the video.


Ikenga said, “The command is aware of the video of two persons allegedly confessing to be criminals.


“I will reach out to the community people in the area to ascertain what happened. I have also escalated the information to the DPO in the area for necessary action.”
