 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. ACHIEVEMENTS BY KANO STATE POLICE COMMAND IN COMBATING AND NIPPING IN THE BUD CASES OF THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLES IN KANO STATE

The Kano State Police Command wishes to inform members of the public its relentless efforts towards combating cases of theft of motor vehicles. During the last one month, the Police Command consistently demonstrated its commitment to ensuring the protection of life and property of all Kano State residents. This is in furtherance to the directives and vision of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM to all Police Commands and Formations to implement Community-based Policing, intelligence-led policing and the display of professional competence for effective service delivery.

2. As a result, the State Police became committed by combating and nipping in the bud cases of motor vehicle theft in the State, embarked on a series of crackdown operations that led to the arrest of Fifteen (15) suspected motor vehicle thieves and recovery from them twenty (20) exhibit motor vehicles.

(i) On 29/11/2023 at about 1800hrs, based on credible information received, the Command’s Tactical Team intercepted a Motor Vehicle Honda Pilot Black in Color with Reg No; DMS 535 AA driven by one Abdullahi Jamilu, ‘m’, of Television Garage, Kaduna State along Obasanjo Road Kano. During the investigation, the suspect confessed to having stolen the vehicle from Pacco Car Wash in Kaduna State. Consequently, the owner of the vehicle was traced and the case is currently under investigation. 

(ii) On 22/11/2023 at about 1202hrs, report was received from a resident of Gwammaja Quarters, Kano that on the same date at about 1030hrs, two unknown thieves conspired and stole away his motor vehicle, a Honda Civic 98 model, ash in colour with reg no; AX TRN 53 parked at the same address. On receipt of the report, teams of detectives were dispatched to arrest the suspect and recover the vehicle. One of the suspects; Ishaq Yusha’u, ‘m’, 36 years old of Kurna Quarters, Kano was arrested and the vehicle was recovered by Technical Support. The case will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.

(iii) On 25/11/2023 at about 1545hrs, credible information was received from a good Samaritan that a motor vehicle Vectra B Opel, ash in Colour with reg no; MKD 339AG Benue was sighted speeding suspiciously along Kofar Waika Quarters, Kano. On receipt of the report, a team of detectives was dispatched to the scene. The occupants on sighting the operatives abandoned the vehicle and ran away. The vehicle was recovered with an investigation in progress. 

(iv) On 16/11/2023 at about 1215hrs, based on intelligence report received, operatives of the Command’s Special Intervention Squad (SIS) arrested one Yusuf Yusuf, ’m’, 28 years old of Kazaure LGA, Jigawa State who conspired with his Gang members armed with Knives and cutlasses and attacked one Auwal Ahmed Mohammed, ’m’, of Zawaciki Quarters and Mohammad Sani, ’m’, of Ladanai Quarters and robbed Ash in colour Mercedes and Mercedes Benz Black in colour unregistered Motor Vehicles on 20/09/2023 and 29/09/2023 respectively. During the investigation, the two stolen vehicles, forty-five live Ammunition and two Anti-tracker machines were recovered from the suspect. The case is under investigation. 

(v) On 16/11/2023 at about 2030hrs, a report was received from Good Samaritan that a vehicle Honda Accord 2008 Model, Golden in colour with Reg no: ABC 934 CV driven by an unknown suspected Fraudster went to fuel the vehicle and pretended that he transferred the money. Fortunately, he was recognized by someone he cheated through the same modus. He abandoned the vehicle and escaped. The vehicle reasonably suspected to be stolen was recovered. The case is under investigation.

(vi) On 07/11/2023 at about 1200hrs, report was received from a resident of Tarauni Market Layin Masallacin Juma’a that his sister’s Car Fantiac Vibe 2007 model , Ash in colour with Reg no KWL 521 KZ was removed from where parked at the same address by unknown person (s). On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police dispatched the tactical team of the Command to arrest the suspect and recover the vehicle. Concerted intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of the suspect, one Dayyabu Sunusi AKA Danfulani, ’m’, 30 years old of Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State and the said Vehicle was also recovered from him along Kano to Wudil Maiduguri road. The case is under investigation.

(vii) On 06/11/2023 at about 1300hrs, report was received from a resident of Sultan Road, Sabon Gari Quarters, Kano that his car was stolen at Sabon Gari Quarters, Kano. On receipt of the report the Commissioner of Police drafted the tactical team of the Command to arrest the perpetrator(s) and recover the vehicle. During the investigation, the suspect was arrested and the vehicle was recovered with another two (2) stolen motor vehicles. The case has been charged to court for prosecution.

(viii) Following a report received on 28/11/2023 that on 20/09/2023 from one Ahmad Umar, ’m’, of Gombe State that while driving his motor vehicle Honda 2014 model red in colour with Reg no ABJ 79 CF along Ahmadu Bello way, some Gang of Armed Robbers attacked him and robbed the vehicle away including some valuable items inside. On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police detailed the tactical team of the Command to arrest the perpetrator(s) and recover the vehicle. Sustained follow-up coupled with technical support led to the arrest of one of the suspect, Yahaya Muhammad in possession of a Handset robbed during the incident who further led the team to the arrest of two of his accomplices and recovery of the said vehicle. The case is under investigation.

(ix) On 25/11/2023 at about 1500hrs, based on credible information received from a Good Samaritan that a car Honda Accord, Continues Discussion, Dark Ash in Colour with Reg. No. NSR 744 suspected to be stolen was abandoned by unknown person(s) along Layin Maitangaran Gadon Kaya Quarters, Kano for about three (3) days. On receipt of the report, teams of detectives were detailed to the scene and the vehicle was recovered with the investigation ongoing.

(x) On 03/11/2023 at about 1130hrs, a distress call was received from a Good Samaritan that a Honda CRV car Green in colour with Reg No: DKA 554 BE suspected to be stolen was abandoned by unknown person(s) along the street at Jafar Dan mallam Road opposite Abdullahi Bayero road Nassarawa GRA, Kano for about four (4) days with the doors unlocked. On receipt of the report, a team of detectives was detailed to the scene and the vehicle was recovered. The case is under investigation.

(xi) On 03/11/2023 at about 0800hrs, report was received from good Samaritans that they sighted a Gold, Volkswagen Wagood Dark Green in colour with Reg no: KMC 287 FR following a rough linking to Zakirai-Gezawa road. On receipt of the report, a team of Safer High Way patrol pursued the car. On reaching Jijitar village Gabasawa LGA, Kano, the occupants abandoned the vehicle and ran away. On spot search of the vehicle, five (5) Bundles of Electric cable wire were recovered from the car. The case is under investigation.

(xii) On 02/11/2023 at about 0200hrs, report was received from a resident that some unknown armed men invaded the house of one Ahmad Lamido, ‘m’, of Dorayi Quarters, Kano and stole away a Toyota Car with Reg. No. ABC 07 KY. On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police directed the use of all available Police assets to recover the vehicle and arrest the suspects. Sustained follow-up coupled with intelligence-led operations, the vehicle was recovered with the investigation in progress.

(xiii) On 08/11/2023 at about 2100hrs, report was received from a resident of Darmanawa Quarters, Kano that on the same date at 2000hrs while he was at Chicken Republic, the following persons; (1) Al-Amin Usman, ‘m’, (2) Usman A.K.A Uzaif, ‘m’, all of Dambare Quarters, Kano deceived him by pretending to buy his motor vehicle Honda DC Dark in colour with Reg. No. Gwa 879 VC, convinced him to go out for a test. On reaching Rayhan Hotel, Kano, they deceived him and ran away with the vehicle. Sustained follow-up coupled with intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of one of the said suspects Al-Amin Usman and the recovery of the Vehicle. The case is under investigation.

(xiv) On 02/11/2023 at about 0200hrs, report was received from a resident that some unknown armed men invaded the house of one Ahmad Lamido, ‘m’, of Dorayi Quarters, Kano and stole away a Toyota Motor Vehicle with Reg. No. ABC 07 KY. On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police directed the use of all available Police assets to recover the vehicle and arrest the suspects. Sustained follow-up coupled with intelligence-led operations led to the recovery of the vehicle with investigation in progress.

(xv) On 04/11/2023 at about 2030hrs, credible information was received that a car Toyota Corolla Saloon with chassis number no; JTDBR32E042047001 equipped with tracking device was noticed, parked at Gwammaja Quarters, by one Mr Adeneyi Bashir, ‘m’, of Nassarawa GRA, Kano. On receipt of the report, team of detectives was drafted to the scene and recovered the Vehicle. Preliminary investigation revealed that the said vehicle was stolen from Abuja but sold in Niger Republic. The case is under investigation.

(xvi) On 08/11/2023 at about 2100hrs, report was received from a resident of Darmanawa Quarters, Kano that on the same date at 2000hrs while he was at Chicken Republic, the following persons; (1) Al-Amin Usman, ‘m’, (2) Usman A.K.A Uzaif, ‘m’, all of Dambare Quarters, Kano deceived him by pretending to buy his motor vehicle Honda DC Dark in colour with Reg. (xvii) On 24/11/2023 at about 2145hrs, a distress call was received from one Mr. Samson Adeyi Ankpa, ‘m’, of Kubwa, FCT Abuja that unknown person(s) trespassed into his house and stole away his Parked Toyota Camry with Reg. No. ABJ 123 PR, golden in colour. Intelligence-led patrols led to the interception of the said vehicle and the occupants; one Shafi’u Adamu, ‘m’, Umar Babaji, ‘m’, Aliyu Muhammad, ‘m’, and Yunusa Saidu, ‘m’, all of Brigade Quarters, Kano, were also arrested. The case is under investigation.

3. Finally, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc while appreciating the peace-loving people of the State for their understanding, cooperation and support, reiterates the Commitments of the Police Command to the protection of life and property of all the inhabitants in the State.
