NEW ECOWAS COMMISSION PRESIDENT GEN BIRAME DIOP ASSUMES OFFICE The new President of the ECOWAS Commission, General Birame Diop, has  assumed office. General Diop, a former Senegalese Minister of Defence and former Chief of the General Staff of the Senegalese Armed Forces, was appointed by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its 69th Ordinary Summit in Sierra Leone. He succeeds Dr. Omar Alieu Touray of The Gambia, whose four-year tenure as President of the ECOWAS Commission has come to an end. The new ECOWAS Commission President Diop has promised to provide strategic leadership as the organisation works to strengthen regional integration, peace and security, economic cooperation and institutional effectiveness. GUNMEN ATTACK DAEWOO CONVOY, KILL 4 SOLDIERS, 2 DRIVERS.(PHOTO).



Gunmen attack Daewoo convoy, kill 4 soldiers, 2 drivers


Gunmen operating along the East/ West Road have attacked a convoy of workers of Daewoo company on their way to Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.


According to security sources the gunmen killed four soldiers and two drivers on escort duties for the companies, while two top officials of the company who are Korean nationals were abducted.


The incident which occurred in spite of the heavy security presence on the road caused pandemonium as many drivers from Tombia and Ekeki park in Yenagoa and Choba and Rumola in Port Harcourt refused to load passengers.


Gunmen on Tuesday morning ambushed a convoy of Dawood workers along the Ahoada/Abua road along the East-West Road in Rivers State, shooting dead Four Soldiers and Two drivers.


A security source, who confirmed the development, said the suspected kidnappers ambushed a team of expatriates being escorted by troops of 5 Bn along road Ahoada- Obua in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.


According to him the gunmen took the security team on the convoy by surprise as they took advantage of the thick forest along the road to launch the attack.


“During the attack, the assailants opened fire on the convoy killing 4 soldiers and 2 civilians’ drivers and subsequently abducted two Koreans in the process. They were on their way to Yenagoa. They have a Daewoo camp in Bayelsa’’


Sources said the attack is being termed a reprisal attack over a military operation in the axis during which arms and ammunition were seized.
