 SENATE ADJOURNS EMERGENCY PLENARY ON STATE POLICE OVER REP’S DEATH. The Senate today suspended consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill and all other legislative business at its emergency plenary session to honour the memory of Hon. Yaya Tongo, a member of the House of Representatives, whose death cast a sombre mood over the National Assembly. The upper chamber had reconvened from recess amid expectations that lawmakers would accelerate action on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across the federation, a measure widely seen as a major step in the ongoing effort to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. However, proceedings were cut short after Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the death of Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State in the House of Representatives. Gov Abba Establishes Elders Council In Kano


Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf has established the formation of the Kano Elders Council (KEC), a body designed to function as an advisory entity to the state government.


This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Kano on Sunday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa.


The Council of Elders, as outlined in the statement, will comprise a broad spectrum of distinguished personalities indigenous to the state.


This include former Governors, Deputy Governors, Senate Presidents, Speakers of the House of Representatives, Speakers of the State House of Assembly, Deputy Speakers, retired Supreme Court justices, retired Appeal Court justices, former Chief Justices of the state, former Secretaries to the State Government, and former Heads of State Civil Service.


Further enriching the council’s composition, it adds that it will also include leaders of the Ulamas, members of the business community, traditional rulers, former heads of security agencies from Kano State, and other notable elders appointed by the government.


Governor Yusuf remarked, “These elders possess a wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and experience, and his administration will deliberately seek to harness their versatile expertise.”


He viewed the council as a vital resource for informed governance and decision-making in the state.


The inauguration date for the Kano Elders Council is yet to be announced.
