 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Northern civil society networks urge FG to declare state of emergency on insecurity 

 


 

The Conference of Northern States Civil Society Networks,has urged President Ahmed Bola Tinubu  to declare a state of emergency on insecurity, to address  killings, child trafficking, banditry, displacement of communities and  kidnapping, across some northern states.


The chairman, conference of northern states civil society networks Ibrahim Waiya made the call in Kano.


According to him, security challenges in Katsina, Plateau, Sokoto, Niger, Kaduna and Zamfara States, re- surfacing of the insurgency in the North East, is so unprecedented,saying that, the dimension at which the security of lives and properties of the Nigerian citizens is fast declining, puts citizens into more fear, hopelessness and uncertainties. 


He stressed that,though  the  service chiefs were appointed few months ago, the  huge investment in the security sector, has raised Citizens expectations on improvement in security of lives and properties in the country.


" and should develop a key performance indicators (KPI) of not more than 6 months, for the security agencies to be assessed for accountability"


The chairman appealed to the national Security Adviser to coordinate the synergy between the nations  Service Chiefs to achieve the desired objectives.


"We acknowledge the efforts of some governors like Sokoto, Borno Kaduna Zamfara, Katsina for their resilience in curtailing the insecurities in their States"


Speaking on how to improve the economy,  Waiya hinted that, conveying  a national economic summit for citizens to identify and deliberate,would uplift the country  to international standard.


" His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, must look inward to raise funds  for Governance businesses other than borrowings, by squeezing the past and present public officials with corruption allegation to recover  the looted funds belonging to Nigerians" 


He pointed out that, the Conference expresses  deep concern over the current state of the judiciary in Nigeria,saying that, the conflicting judgments being issued by various courts of the same jurisdiction, have created a sense of confusion and frustration among the citizens. 


"The Conference is appealing to the Judicial Service Commission to take swift action to thoroughly investigate the root causes of the conflicting judgments and implement measures to ensure the judicial system"


Radio Nigeria reports that,the Conference of Northern States Civil Society Networks, 

is a forum of states based civil Society Networks operating in Northern Nigeria, the group brought together various CSOs networks operating in the Nineteen Northern States and FCT, under a common platform, with the aim of achieving sustainable socio economic and political development.
