AFCON final: Sack coach Peseiro, Peterside urges NFF
A former Nigerian international goalkeeper, Idah Peterside, has called for the sacking of the Super Eagles Coach, Jose Peseiro.
Peseiro led the Super Eagles to the final of the African Cup of Nations which ended yesterday. However, the team lost to Ivory Coast to claim second.
Two strikes from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller were enough to cancel Troost-Ekong’s opener.
Prior to the game, the Super Eagles players and officials were confident that Nigeria would be crowned kings of Africa after Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final clash against host Ivory Coast.
Peterside who retired from active football in 2002 and is currently a football analyst urged the Nigeria Football Federation to sack Peseiro on Monday while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
He asserted that Peseiro’s moment with the national team is over while decrying Peseiro’s defensive approach to games which he said is new to the country.
“You know, a lot of people asked me yesterday, if the coach got to the finals,” he said on Monday. “What do you think? I said, fire him!” he said.
The AFCON hosts, Ivory Coast became the reigning champions after beating the Nigerian team 2-1 in the Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday night at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium.
The House of Representatives congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria for clinching the silver prize at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations for the fifth time.
The spokesman for the house, Akin Rotimi (APC-Ekiti State), in a statement on Monday, said that the lawmakers celebrate the players and coaching crew for their spirited display in Cote’d Ivoire.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Super Eagles had said it accepted defeat after the 2023 AFCON final to Ivory Coast.
Reacting to their loss in an X tweet on Monday, the Eagles said even though they feel disappointed, they will cherish the silver medal they won.
“Disappointed, yet we make do with the Silver Medal,” the Egles wrote.
