 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Phone Snatching, Being in Possession of Stolen Property, Offering of Gratification to a Public Servant. 


The Operatives attached to the Department of Operation Bauchi Police Command have arrested Suleiman Habibu 'm' aged 25yrs and Atiku Mohammed 'm' aged 30yrs all of Jahun Area of Bauchi metropolis for being in possession of stolen property, receiving stolen property, and offering gratification to a public servant and was rejected.

The suspects were arrested during a visibility routine patrol behind Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium and handed over to detectives attached to  'C' Divisional  Police Headquarters for questioning. 

Preliminary Investigation revealed that the suspects had robbed the nine (9) mobile phones found in their possession from different locations in Gombe state.  The detectives further recovered dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp as well as the sum of seventy-eight thousand Naira (N78,000) offered as a bribe to compromise the investigation but was vehemently declined by the investigating Officer. 


To this end, the Commissioner of Police CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, psc has directed that the case be discreetly investigated in a bid to locate the victims of the crime and thereafter charge the suspects to court for prosecution.


In a related development, On the 8th February 2024, a distressed call was received by the Divisional Police Officer 'C' Division that on the same date at about 1030hrs an unknown person (s) stabbed and injured motorcycle owner multiple times with a sharp object and his motorcycle (Boxers) was taken away from him along Ningi road, Bauchi. 

Upon receiving the distressed call, a patrol team was dispatched by the Divisional Police Officer to the scene and swiftly took the victim to Specialist Hospital Bauchi, where he was treated and discharged. 

Following a meticulous Investigation and intelligence gathering, barely an hour after, the suspect was arrested and the motorcycle was equally recovered. 

The suspect upon interrogation was identified as Abdullahi Mohammed 'm' of Bayan Banki in Mangu LGA of Plateau state. He also confessed to having perpetrated the heinous act to obtain the motorcycle from his victim. 

The suspect will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation to face the full wrath of the law.
