 Akwa Ibom Govt Approves Occupational Safety Department in Public Service The Akwa Ibom State Government has approved the creation of a Department of Occupational Safety in the public service, to be led by a Permanent Secretary under the Office of the Head of Civil Service. The approval was granted during the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting on Wednesday, presided over by Governor Umo Eno. In a statement on Thursday, Commissioner for Information, Hon. Aniekan Umanah, also announced directives for Sterling Global to halt further land encroachment and creek closures, following complaints from oil-bearing communities. Additionally, the EXCO assigned oversight of the Infrastructure and Asset Management Agency to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government to improve efficiency.

 Man sentenced to life imprisonment for stabbing teenager to death over girlfriend 

A High Court in Kano State on Thursday, sentenced a 22-year-old man, Nura Sabiu, 22, to life imprisonment for stabbing an 18-year-old to death.

The court also sentenced Dahiru Ubale, 21, to five years imprisonment.

Sabiu and Ubale were convicted on two count charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Justice Usman Naā€™abba held that the Prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

ā€œI hereby sentence Sabiu to life imprisonment and Ubale to five years imprisonment,ā€ he held.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Lamido Sorondinki, informed the court that the defendants committed the offence on April 17, 2017, at Jalabi Village of Bunkure Local Government Kano.

He said the defendants conspired and attacked and stabbed the deceased Abba Ismaā€™il, 18, to death.

The police said the convicts stabbed the teenager with a knife in his back because he was having a relationship with his(Sabiu) girlfriend (Zahraā€™u).

ā€œAs a result of the stabbing, the deceased sustained grievous injuries and was taken to the Rano Hospital where he was confirmed dead by a medical Doctor,ā€ he said.

The prosecutor presented three witnesses to the court to prove its case.

The defendants had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes the provisions of sections 97 and 221 of the Penal Code.

The defence counsel, Mr Umar Danbaito, presented three witnesses including the defendants.
