 M23 says hundreds of Burundi soldiers captured in latest Congo offensive The Rwanda-backed M23 group has captured hundreds of Burundian soldiers during its latest offensive in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a rebel official said, as clashes continued despite a warning from the Trump administration. Last week M23 entered the strategic town of Uvira near the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept". Rwanda denies supporting M23 and has blamed Congolese and Burundian forces for the renewed fighting.  Rising cost of cement: Minister summons manufacturers


The Minister of Works, David Umahi, says prominent cement manufacturers have been summoned to a meeting over the rising cost of cement.


He expressed worry that the cost of the product was rising at an astronomical rate despite huge patronage by road and housing contractors to cement manufacturers.


The Minister’s Special Adviser (Media), Orji Uchenna Orji, in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, explained that the meeting would take place on Monday, February 19, 2024, at the Ministry’s Conference Hall, Mabushi, Abuja.


According to the statement, “The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has summoned an urgent meeting of all cement manufacturers in Nigeria.”


It said that those invited are Dangote Plc, BUA Plc, Larfarge, and others.


The minister said that it is common knowledge that the manufacturers have their challenges, saying that they shall look into, but from their findings, the disparity between ex-factory price and the market price is wide.


He stated that they need to look into the situation and other issues with a view to finding a common front.
