14-year-old Wyoming boy fatally stabbed by masked teens while trying to protect his girlfriend.
Bobby Maher went to the East Ridge Mall with a friend on April 7th after his girlfriend called him to tell him she was being followed by 2 masked individuals.
When Bobby arrived at the mall he witnessed the 2 individuals later identified as 15-year-old Jarreth "JJ" Plunkett and 15-year-old Dominique "Dom" Harris.
After making contact with his girlfriend and her friend the four attempted to avoid JJ and Dom by exiting the mall. The whole time Bobby was reportedly asking the assailants to just leave them alone.
Once outside, the altercation drew a crowd of onlookers. As the crowd gathered, JJ repeatedly told Bobby to swing on him. Bobby clearly didn't want to fight and kept walking backwards while trying to de-escalate the situation, however, the large crowd of juveniles gathered around, blocking Bobby from entering the mall to escape.
Multiple witnesses say Bobby never threw a punch or attempted to fight back. At one point it is reported that Bobby saw JJ brandishing a knife. Bobby reportedly asked him to fight fair and JJ responded, "I don't fight fair".
The pair were able to flank Maher. Dom grabbed him around the waist throwing him to the ground and punching him in the face. It was while being held down by Dom, that JJ moved in with the knife and stabbed Bobby causing the fatal injury. Bobby was able to get up and attempt to flee with aid from his friend but collapsed before entering the mall.
The two assailants then fled the mall and tossed the ski masks and knife along with a vape near the mall entrance. They then borrowed a cellphone to call JJ's parents and ask them to come pick them up.
The two were taken into custody a short time later and during interviews with police, they admitted to stealing the knife from Target. They also stated they wore the masks because they went to the mall "to cause trouble".
Both are being charged as adults and could face life in prison.
All 4 juveniles involved attended Morgan Middle School in Casper, Wyoming.
Bobby Maher is remembered as an amazing son, brother and teammate. He was an amazing kid at school and just in general. Bobby had a passion for basketball. Bobby died trying his best to do the right thing and tried in every way to just protect his girlfriend and go home safely.
This is a heartbreaking story and many thoughts are with the family and friends of Bobby Maher.
