SENATE ADJOURNS EMERGENCY PLENARY ON STATE POLICE OVER REP’S DEATH. The Senate today suspended consideration of the highly anticipated State Police Bill and all other legislative business at its emergency plenary session to honour the memory of Hon. Yaya Tongo, a member of the House of Representatives, whose death cast a sombre mood over the National Assembly. The upper chamber had reconvened from recess amid expectations that lawmakers would accelerate action on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across the federation, a measure widely seen as a major step in the ongoing effort to reform Nigeria’s security architecture. However, proceedings were cut short after Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the death of Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State in the House of Representatives.  How UNIMAID Lecturer Was Stabbed To Death In Office

A lecturer at the University of Maiduguri, Dr Kamar Abdulkadir, was stabbed to death in his office on Sunday.

The deceased was of the Department of Physical Health Education.

Confirming the incident to newsmen, the University spokesman, Prof Danjuma Gambo, said the lecturer was murdered on Sunday evening.

He said no arrest had been made but police and other security agencies have lunched their investigation into the matter.

Our correspondent gathered that Abdulkadir was in his office to clear a pending work when the assailants murdered him.

Asked if his murder has any connection with position as exams officer, the spokesman said, “The University management has allowed the police and other security agencies to conclude their investigation, and certainly they would give a report on what actually happened and why”.

Speaking to newsmen, a lecturer in the faculty said the deceased took advantage of the Easter holiday to tidy up some work on his table when the assailants crept in and murdered him.

“He was brutally murdered with knife and hammer, leaving him in the pool of his blood. They also escaped with his car and some other valuables. However, many people are attributing the murder to the position held as the faculty examination officer,” he added.
