Update: We recently brought you a story about a Kentucky boy that officials believed died after eating contaminated strawberries at a school function. Sadly, he died from fentanyl poisoning.
We first covered this story back in March and at that time the family of Trey Harris had said he had fallen ill after eating strawberries from a school fundraiser. That information caused the Hopkins County Health Department to issue a warning to the public. They were instructed not to eat any strawberries purchased from the school fundraiser. This caused an uproar in the community as worried parents rushed to check on their children and throw out the strawberries.
After the FDA and a state lab evaluated the suspected berries they were found to not suffer from any contamination.
Now the Hopkins County Coroner has released their findings. The coroner's office has ruled Trey's death as fentanyl intoxication however the manner of death is marked as undetermined.
Trey's stepfather was arrested on March 26th after a search warrant of the family's home uncovered firearms, drugs and drug paraphernalia. 33-year-old Antonio Person is being charged with trafficking fentanyl, possession of a handgun by a felon, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia .
Now he is also facing charges of second-degree manslaughter and is due in court on Friday, April 12th. We will update.
