 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. IMAAN STRESSES THE NEED FOR UNIFIED APPROACH TO NATIONAL SECURITY


The Honourable Minister of State for Police Affairs, Hajia Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim has stressed the need for a unified approach to national security and emphasized the importance of broad societal involvement in formulating security strategies.

She made this known during a visit of the Technical Committee on Strengthening Security in Nigeria led by Major General A. T. Jibrin (Rtd) to the Headquarters of the Ministry of Police Affairs.

The Minister commended the committee's clarity of purpose and pledged unwavering support for policy implementation and reform efforts. She urged the committee to engage with local communities to enable grassroots participation in security strategies.

 Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim tasked the committee to identify essential technologies and craft an integrated security solution for Nigeria security that would enhance the capacity of agencies charged with the responsibility of protecting lives and property in the country. 

In her words, “The visit to the Ministry of Police Affairs underscores its pivotal role as a major stakeholder in national security. I am reaffirming my commitment to support the committee's endeavors toward policy implementation and comprehensive security reforms for the country”.

Earlier, the leader of the committee Major General Abdulmalik T Jibrin (rtd) thanked the Honourable Minister for the reception and expressed that the committee's major role is to facilitate the acquisition of technical equipment and capacity development for the security agencies especially the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). 

In his words, the committee was convened under the directive of President Bola Ahmad Tinubu GCFR to address escalating security concerns in the country and aims to bridge existing gaps through technology-driven initiatives. The committee comprises representatives from key entities, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, Ministry of Communications, Nigerian Police Force, Ministry of Police Affairs, the Armed Forces etc”.


In a related development, the Honourable Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim  led the charge for cybersecurity at the closing of the 10th Africa Working Group on Cybercrimes for Heads of Units, emphasizing Africa's unified stance against cyber threats, with over 120 participants from 54 nations.

In her remarks, she underscored the necessity for collective resolve, evident throughout the conference, and reaffirmed the commitment to safeguarding Africa's digital landscape. 

According to her, “Together, we can shape Africa's cyber resilience, and united, we will overcome the challenges posed by cybercrime. Let our actions resonate louder than words as we progress towards a future where Africa excels in cybersecurity.
