Indiana foster mother being charged in the death of a 10-year-old boy in her care.
48-year-old Jennifer Lee Wilson was arrested in Berrien County, Michigan, on July 13th. The arrest comes after a warrant for reckless homicide was issued in connection to the April 25th death of 10-year-old Dakota Levi Stevens.
Dakota had been placed in the care of Wilson around a month before the incident in which he lost his life.
First responders were called to a home in Liberty Township, Indiana, on April 25th to the report of an unresponsive child. Dakota was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The medical examiner ruled the death as being a result of Mechanical Asphyxiation.
Wilson told police she had "laid on top of Dakota to keep him from leaving", although she couldn't remember if she tackled him or if they fell to the ground together. She said she "laid on top of him for 5 minutes until he quit moving". At that point she thought he was "faking" until rolling him over and noticing his eyelids were pale. Wilson then began attempting CPR while calling 911.
Authorities have viewed Ring Doorbell footage which shows Wilson who weighs 340 lbs laying on the head and neck of Dakota who weighed only 91 lbs. In the video Dakota can be heard screaming until eventually becoming silent. In another video Wilson can be heard saying, "I was laying on him and he was acting bad".
In the aftermath of Dakota's death, all other children in Wilson's care were removed and her license to foster children was put on hold pending a full revocation.
It's not clear if Wilson has retained legal counsel or entered a plea of any kind at this time.
