Kenya's Ruto sacks cabinet after nationwide protests over new taxes

Kenyan President William Ruto on Thursday dismissed his entire cabinet apart from the foreign minister in the wake of nationwide anti-government protests.

Ruto promised to form a new government that will be lean and efficient, he also dismissed the attorney general and said ministries would be run by their permanent secretaries.

Ruto said he made the move after listening to the people and that he would form a broad-based government after consultations.

The youth-led protests, sparked by planned tax hikes which Ruto was forced to abandon, have created the biggest crisis of his two-year presidency.

At least 39 people were killed in clashes with the police and some demonstrators briefly stormed parliament last month.
