 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  MAJOR GENERAL YAHAYA ASSUMES COMMAND AS THE NEW CORPS COMMANDER ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERS

........Tasks officers to drive the Corps to greater height


Major General Baba Umaru Yahaya assumed Command of the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as the 43rd  Corps Commander Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (CCEME) on Friday 19 July 2024 at the Corps Headquarters Bonny Cantonment, Lagos State.


The new CCEME, Major General Baba Umaru Yahaya, who took over command from his predecessor, Major General Hassan Gadam Tafida, expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja NAM, for the opportunity to pilot the affairs of his corps. He affirmed his continuous loyalty to the COAS and the nation, as he resumes military duties in his new appointment. 


He extolled the virtues and personality of his predecessor as a dedicated and selfless senior officer and a knowledgeable Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (NAEME) general who had projected the Corps capabilities with commendable successes. He promised to sustain the gains of his predecessor while making in road for the Corps in relevant areas.


General Yahaya assured continued support of the corps to all NA operations as required. He also urged all Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (EME) personnel to focus all efforts towards achieving the objectives of the COAS command philosophy.  He stressed the imperative to sustain capabilities, training, sound administration and troops welfare. 


Earlier in his farewell address, the outgone CCEME,  Major General Hassan Gadan Tafida, thanked the Almighty Allah, for the protection and guidance throughout his tenure as the CCEME; while appreciating the COAS for giving him the prestigious opportunity to command the Corps also during the course of his career in the NA, which had afforded him the platform to contribute significantly to the NA through his profession as an engineer. He added that it was indeed a great privilege to pilot the affairs of the Corps."


He further charged officers and personnel of the corps to remain resolute in the discharge of their constitutional roles, in line with the COAS' command philosophy. "Once again, I appreciate the priceless support you have all given me to succeed. I urge you to give the same to my successor and even more as the success of the corps is the responsibility of all EME personnel."


Highpoints of the event were signing of the handing over notes, decoration of the new CCEME with the Corps insignia, presentation of quarter guard, lowering and hoisting of the new command flags.
