 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  Suspected Armed Robbers Kill Woman In Ekiti


There was panic in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital as gunmen suspected to be armed robbers shot dead a woman.


The incident which has raised concerns among residents of the state’s capital occured along NTA Road, Ado Ekiti around 7 am on Saturday.


The woman, whose identity is not yet ascertained, LEADERSHIP gathered, was killed by suspected armed robbers operating on motorcycle.


A source close to the area said, “The gunmen who were riding on motorcycle made attempt to forcefully dispossess the woman of her bag while standing by the road.


“The woman was said to have resisted the attempt and refused to surrender the her bag and others valuables to them.


“She was shot by her assailants who fled the scene immediately”.


People around scampered to safety while business owners and traders hurriedly closed their shops.


Recall that no fewer than four persons were killed in Ado Ekiti about two weeks ago with the State Police Command making some arrest in connections with heinous crimes.


Confirming the incident, the Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sunday Abutu said the killing was more of a robbery incident.


He disclosed that the sum of forty thousand, two hundred and eighty naira (N40,280) was found in the bag of the deceased woman.


Abutu said her body has been deposited in the morgue and the police have launched manhunt for the perpetrators.
