1980 AFCON Champion Charles Bassey Dies at 71 Charles Bassey, a member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, has died at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness. He passed away on Saturday in his hometown, Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday by its General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, describing the loss as part of a “day of double tragedy” following the earlier death of team captain Christian Chukwu. Bassey was part of the Green Eagles team that secured Nigeria’s first AFCON title with a 3-0 victory over Algeria at the National Stadium in Lagos on March 22, 1980. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching and managed several clubs, including Calabar Rovers, Mobil Pegasus, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingoes, Akwa United, and Wikki Tourists. His passing brings the number of deceased members of the 1980 squad to nine.

MBAPPE SCORES ON DEBUT AS REAL MADRID WIN THE EUROPEAN SUPER CUP.(PHOTO).

Mbappe scores on debut as Real Madrid win the European Super Cup

Kylian Mbappe scored on his debut as Real Madrid won the UEFA Super Cup for a record-breaking sixth time with a 2-0 win over Atalanta on Wednesday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Champions League winners took the lead in the 59th minute through Fede Valverde, before Mbappe’s strike secured victory in Warsaw.

The reigning UEFA Champions League holders had to wait until the second half to find the opening goal as Federico Valverde put them in the lead. Following some great work from Jude Bellingham, Mbappe doubled their lead soon afterwards to wrap up a dominant display.

Federico Valverde was also on target for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who lifted the trophy for a record-breaking sixth time.

Mbappe endured a quiet first half at Warsaw’s National Stadium, Isak Hien blocking his 15th-minute shot, while the woodwork denied both teams inside the opening 45 minutes.

All the build-up to this game surrounded Mbappe’s impending debut since his blockbuster move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Although he endured a generally subdued first half, it did not take him long to settle into life as a Galactico. His fine second-half strike sealed Madrid’s record-breaking sixth Super Cup triumph.

There was also history made by team-mates Carvajal and Modric, who became the first players to appear in five Super Cup wins.

Once the two-goal lead was established, the link-up play between the front four was breathtaking to watch and, if tonight is anything to go by, Los Blancos will take some stopping in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.

Atalanta generally held their own on their first appearance in this game, but Madrid were just too strong in the end and Italy’s wait for a first Super Cup success since 2007 goes on.
