UPDATE: AMERICAN WOMAN FOUND CHAINED TO A TREE IN INDIA ADMITS SHE CHAINED HERSELF TO THE TREE AND SHE WAS NEVER MARRIED. (PHOTO).

Update- American woman found chained to a tree in India admits she chained herself to the tree and she was never married.

50-year-old Lalita Kumar was found chained to a tree deep in the Indian Jungle on June 27th. The shepard who discovered her quickly notified authorities and a rescue effort ensued. When local authorities arrived on scene they discovered an emaciated Kumar bound to a tree by iron chains. Her passport and an expired Visa along with some other personel effects were found near by.

Once she was freed and taken to a nearby hospital Kunar alleged said she could only communicate through writing because she had lock jaw. Through a series of notes she outlined a shocking story where her husband had chained her to the tree and she hadn't eaten in 40 days.

Indian officials were skeptical from the beginning, saying that although she was emaciated, they didn't believe a person could actually survive such an ordeal. After some investigating, her story began to fall apart. Now Kumar has come clean, admitting she chained herself to the tree.

Her reasons seem to be financial combined with a deteriorating mental state. She also claimed to have been seeing hallucinations and that her lock jaw was in fact a side effect from an injection for psychosis.

It's not clear whether Indian authorities plan on pressing any charges against Kumar. She has been in contact with family back in the United States.
