 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity.  Why I chose to protest – Nursing mother protests with her infant after her husband was killed by bandits.


A woman in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has disclosed why she joined the "End Bad Governance in Nigeria" protest despite being a nursing mother.


The woman came for the protest with her infant in her hand.


She joined other protesters at Eagle Square in Abuja.


According to the woman whose identity was not revealed, her husband was killed by bandits in Katsina State and this spurred her to participate in the protest.


She added that police are shooting teargas at protesters gathered at Eagle Square and she questioned if they wanted to kill her baby.


"I came to protest the hardship in Nigeria and the police are shooting tear gas at us. Do they also want to kill my baby? People cannot eat. Things are hard," she said, according to Newsmen.
