STATEHOUSE PRESS STATEMENT PRESIDENT TINUBU'S MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE TO CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE AND HER FAMILY   With a deep sense of grief, I condole with Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, and the entire family on the passing of their son, Nkanu Nnamdi.   As a parent myself who has suffered the loss of a loved one, no grief is as devastating as losing a child.   I empathise with the family at this difficult time, and I mourn this sad loss with them.   Ms Adichie is a literary icon who has brought joy and light to many homes globally, and I pray she and her family find strength in the Almighty in this trying hour.   My prayers are with the family.   Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Federal Republic of Nigeria January 8, 2026

Five injured in Lagos bridge accident

Five people sustained injuries in a road accident on Ifako Bridge, Lagos, on Tuesday morning, involving an unpainted commercial Mazda bus (MUS 576 YJ) and a Korope mini-bus (FKJ 618).

The crash was attributed to driver negligence and brake failure.

In a statement from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. as the Mazda bus headed toward Ogudu.

Preliminary investigations suggest the driver of the Mazda bus lost control after becoming distracted while eating.

The situation escalated when the vehicle’s brakes suddenly failed, resulting in the collision.

LASTMA officers arrived promptly at the scene, rescuing five passengers from the Mazda bus, one male and four females who sustained varying degrees of injury.

The injured individuals were attended to by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and transported to the Accident and Emergency Centre near the Toll Gate along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for further treatment.

In a statement, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended his sympathies to the victims and urged commercial drivers to remain vigilant and avoid dangerous driving practices that put lives at risk.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, an Acura SUV (AAA 818 HV) collided with two cows while attempting to avoid a herd crossing the highway at Iyana-Oworo, inward Ogudu.

The crash resulted in the death of the two cows and severe damage to the vehicle.

LASTMA officials cleared the wrecked SUV to restore traffic flow and handed the vehicle over to the Ogudu Police Station for further investigation.
