Zambia parliament passes disputed bill to change election laws Zambia's parliament overwhelmingly passed on Monday a bill to modify constitutional provisions related to elections. The opposition claims it will bolster President Hakainde Hichilema at next year's polls, but the government rejects the assertions, with President Hichilema stating that the changes are proposed in good faith for the long-term benefits to the Zambian people. Opposition politicians, civil society and church groups had lobbied against Bill 7, saying it was rushed through parliament and will promote Hichilema and his UPND party at the August 2026 vote, AFP reported. The bill amends 13 articles in the constitution of the copper-rich Southern African nation, notably increasing the number of parliamentary seats from 156 to 226; reserving 35 seats for women, youth and disabled people; and ending a limit of two five-year terms for mayors.  Leave Shaibu alone, Oshiomhole tells critics

Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole yesterday told those criticizing the restoration of relationship between him and his estranged god-son Philip Shaibu to mind their own business.

The one-time National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), now a senator representing Edo North District,, decried the negative comments against the reinstated Edo deputy governor for identifying with the APC.

Oshiomhole declared that he was not bothered about the negative comments against him for reconciling with Shaibu, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC.

The leader of APC in Edo (Oshiomhole) spoke at the governorship campaign rally at Jattu, hometown of Shaibu in Etsako West Local Government Area.

Speaking at the Jattu’s rally, Oshiomhole declared that he forgave Shaibu his trespasses against him after his mother, Alhaja Ashetu Oshiomhole, begged him to put behind the past, insisting that the governing PDP in Edo had nothing to offer the residents of the state.

He pleaded with Edo electorate to massively vote for the APC candidate in the September 21 governorship poll, Senator Monday Okpebholo, assuring that he would prioritise their welfare and develop the state if given the mandate.

Oshiomhole berated Governor Godwin Obaseki Obaseki for hiring consultants outside Edo to implement local contracts to the detriment of skilled workers and indigenous contractors.

He vowed the Okpebholo would reverse such development.

He said: “I told you that we are not going to Abuja to be sleeping. People say Okpebholo does not talk. Okpebholo knows what to say and how to say it. Everything is calculated.
