Paris to name sports facility after after dead Ugandan athlete Cheptegei

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has said on Friday that the city will dedicate a sports facility in memory of Uganda Olympic runner, Rebecca Cheptegei, who passed away.

The marathon runner, who competed in the Paris Games last month died on Thursday, four days after she was doused in petrol and ignited by her boyfriend in Kenya, in the latest attack on a female athlete in the country.

In the women's marathon at the Paris Games, Cheptegei, 33, made her Olympic debut by placing 44th.

Dickson Ndiema Marangach, her Kenyan partner, attacked her in front of her kids on Sunday, leaving her with 80% burns, according to police and medical professionals.

Her death, which the United Nations called a "violent murder", triggered widespread condemnation.
