Missing Indiana woman recovered from Wabash River after husband who reported her missing admits to taking her life.
Kayla Flaherty was reported missing by her husband on October 4th. According to her husband Daniel, the 36-year-old Patoka, Indiana native was heading to Vincennes to see family when she went missing.
However, when police began investigating, they noticed Kayla's cellphone tower data did not support Daniel's statement. After searching the route she had supposedly taken and finding no sign of Kayla or the SUV, Daniel was brought in for more questioning.
Investigators had received information indicating Kayla was filing for a divorce. When questioned, Daniel stated he hadn't been served with papers but he and Kayla had been discussing their divorce shortly before she had left for Vincennes, Indiana.
As the questioning intensified, Daniel was read his Miranda Rights and the true story began to emerge. Daniel eventually admitted to repeatedly striking Kayla with a hammer. Daniel went on to tell deputies he had set the SUV on fire with deceased Kayla inside. He then dumped the SUV into the Wabash River.
Daniel indicated where he believed the SUV would be found on a map and authorities traveled to the location. Once there they were able to recover the burned out SUV with human remains inside.
Daniel Flaherty has been charged with murder. His first court appearance was this morning, Monday, October 6th. During his first appearance he was ordered to be held with no bond and requested a public defender. He will be back in court October 16th.
Our thoughts are with Kayla and everyone who loved her.
