 The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday.  Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria Pays Historic Visit to Onitsha Basilica

The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, His Excellency, Most Rev.Michael Francis Crotty paid a historic visit to the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha Anambra State


Most Rev.Crotty who is also the Ambassador for Vatican City in his homily during the Solemn Mass, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Catholic faithfuls for their steadfastness in faith as well as their zeal in worshipping God. He highlighted the universal church solidarity with Nigeria, affirming the Pontiff's prayers and blessings for the country’s peace, unity and progress. 


The visit which marked  his first official visit to Onitsha Catholic Archdiocese since his appointment as the Vatican’s representative to Nigeria, underscored the Vatican’s commitment to the spiritual growth of the Catholic Church in Nigeria.


Receiving the Apostolic Nuncio, the  Archbishop of Onitsha, His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke, said the visit is a powerful affirmation of the bond that unites the universal Church under the Holy Father, Pope Francis. He appreciated Most Rev. Crotty for honouring the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity with his presence.


The Onitsha Catholic Archdiocesan Director of Communication, Rev.Fr.George Adimike in his welcome address emphasized the significance of the historical visit of Apostolic Nuncio to Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity Onitsha,  recognizing its pivotal role in evangelization and spiritual development since its establishment.


The Archdiocesan faithful also presented a special gift to the Nuncio as a token of appreciation for his visit, services and dedication.


The event was well attended by dignitaries, clergies, and lay faithful from various parishes within the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha.
